Final semester at Monash, graduating December. FYP on 2D-to-3D video conversion for XR — my piece is the RL model that evaluates conversion quality. Two courses, an active job hunt, and a strict policy of finishing things rather than starting them.

Working on

  • FYP — 2D-to-3D video conversion for XR. Building the reinforcement-learning model that scores conversion quality.
  • Coursework: Artificial Intelligence and Software Architecture. Both are heavy, both have deadlines that don't move.
  • Been There Series — the personal project getting the most attention outside school right now.
  • Wan's Dine — maintenance mode. Bug fixes only until the FYP is shipped.
  • Interview prep for front-end and mobile roles. Resume, system design notes, and algorithm warm-ups on rotation.

Learning

  • Reinforcement learning fundamentals — reward shaping and policy evaluation, mostly for the FYP.
  • React Native — every mobile posting expects it, and I want the option.
  • Frontend system design — caching, hydration trade-offs, state boundaries. The interview kind.
  • Slowly redoing classic data structures and algorithms in a paper notebook. No grind, just steady.

Reading

  • Refactoring — Martin Fowler, 2nd ed. Re-reading slowly with my own code as the exercise set.
  • Kitchen Confidential — Anthony Bourdain. Off-hours read. Honest, slow, very my pace.
  • Weekly: lobste.rs, Josh Comeau's blog, and a small handful of MY/SG tech newsletters.

Off-screen

  • Working through KL's Japanese restaurants one by one. Slow project, no rush.
  • Dim sum on Sunday mornings is non-negotiable. Same handful of 茶楼 on rotation.
  • Cooking on weekends when the FYP allows — mostly Cantonese. Soup, rice, simple things.
  • Long walk after dinner, same loop most nights. Where most of the actual thinking happens.
  • Handwritten notes before any code gets written. The notebook is usually louder than the editor.

Quietly skipping

  • New side projects — nothing starts until the FYP is in version control.
  • Twitter / X — uninstalled. Not missing it.
  • Chasing every new JS framework. Things have to earn their keep before they go on the stack.
  • All-nighters. Sleep is part of the schedule this year.
